Sustainable Palm Oil - the future?
Well I wanted to say something about palm oil. Clearing of forests for palm oil plantations is one of the growing factors in the reduction of orangutan habitat in Indonesia and Malaysia. Friends of the Earth last year highlighted this to great effect in their report - be sure to check out the link.
But this month's Geographical magazine have beaten me to it. I urge any of you in the UK to read it - the explanation of the issues is compelling, and the tone is optimistic. Urge companies (especially Tesco) to comply with demands for sustainable palm oil in the very near future (it doesn't exist yet ...) and sustainably-grown palm oil might just be able to coexist with the orangutan for many years to come.
